We are pleased to provide you with an update on our canine underwater treadmill service and how it is helping our furry patients. We purchased our underwater treadmill with the new clinic layout in mind but with COVID-19 coinciding with our opening date, the use of the treadmill was delayed. Well, it has been up and running for the past 24 months and has really been a great benefit to our patients.
A canine underwater treadmill is a specialized piece of equipment used for the rehabilitation and fitness of dogs (and cats!). It combines the benefits of treadmill exercise with the therapeutic effects of water. Here is how it works and why it is used.
How It Works:
Design: The treadmill is an enclosed, waterproof chamber with a moving belt similar to a standard treadmill. It features a large tank or chamber that can be filled with water to varying depths.
Water Levels: The depth of the water can be adjusted to provide differing levels of buoyancy and resistance. The water supports the dog’s weight, reducing the impact on joints and muscles while still allowing for exercise.
Movement: The treadmill belt moves at a controlled speed, allowing the dog to walk or run in a consistent, forward motion. The water provides resistance, with helps to strengthen muscles and improve endurance.
Adjustments: The speed of the treadmill, water level and the duration of the session are customizable to suit the dogs’ specific rehabilitation needs and fitness level.
Underwater treadmills offer a range of benefits for patients, especially those dealing with injury, surgery recovery, or mobility issues. Here is a rundown of some key advantages:
Low-Impact Exercise: The buoyancy of water reduces the impact on joints and muscles, making it ideal for dogs with arthritis or those recovering surgery.
Enhanced Rehabilitation: It aids in physical therapy by allowing controlled exercise and movement. This can help improve strength, flexibility, and overall mobility.
Improved Cardiovascular Health: Regular use can boost cardiovascular fitness without putting undue strain on the body.
Increased Muscle Strength: The resistance of water helps build muscle strength and endurance more effectively than on land.
Weight Management: It is a great tool for managing weight, especially for dogs who need to shed pounds but can’t handle high-impact exercise.
Pain Relief: The warmth and buoyancy of the water can help alleviate pain and reduce swelling, promoting more rapid recovery.
Customizable Therapy: The treadmill speed and water level can be adjusted to suit the specific needs of the dog, providing a tailored exercise regimen.
Mental Stimulation: The novelty of change in environment and the focus required to walk on the treadmill can provide mental enrichment.
Our underwater treadmill continues to be a valuable tool in the rehabilitation of dogs recovering from surgery or injury. The low-impact, buoyant environment helps reduce stress on joints and supports a safe, effective recovery process.
We have seen significant improvements in muscle strength and mobility among dogs using the treadmill. The resistance of the water allows for a more intense workout, which helps build muscle and endurance while minimizing strain.
Many of our clients have reported noticeable improvements in their pets’ overall fitness and well-being. Whether it is aiding in weight management, relieving arthritis symptoms, or enhancing general physical conditioning, the treadmill is proving to be a beneficial component of our therapy programs.
Overall, underwater treadmills are a valuable resource in canine rehabilitation, offering both physical and mental benefits.
We are grateful for your trust in our services and look forward to continuing to support your pet’s health and recovery. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a session, please do not hesitate to reach out.
