Some Essential Tips For A Safe And Joyful Holiday Season For Your Furry Friends

Greetings, dear pet parents! As the holiday season approaches, we’d like to offer some suggestions for pet safety during the upcoming festivities. Amidst the joy and merriment, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential hazards that can pose a threat to our pets. In this edition, we’ll list some essential tips to help you have a safe and joyful holiday season with your four-legged family members.

Deck the Halls with Pet Safety in Mind

The twinkling lights, shiny ornaments, and festive decorations that adorn our homes during the holidays create a magical atmosphere. However, they can also be alluring and potentially hazardous to our pets. Curious cats and dogs might see these as new playthings, so take precautions to avoid any mishaps.

Secure Christmas trees to prevent toppling, especially if you have climbers among your furry friends. Choose pet-friendly ornaments, avoiding those that can break easily or have small, easily swallowed parts. Tinsel may add sparkle to your tree, but it can be harmful if ingested, as it may cause intestinal blockages. Also be mindful if your pets have a fascination with ribbons or things that dangle.

Holiday Feasts: A Tempting Table for Trouble

The holiday season is synonymous with delicious feasts and treats and our pets are often eyeing our plates with anticipation. While it’s tempting to share the joy with our furry friends, certain foods can be harmful or even toxic to them.

Keep chocolate, especially dark chocolate, away from pets as it contains substances like theobromine, which is toxic to dogs and cats. Xylitol is another substance that can be harmful to pets and did you know that it can also be labeled as “Birch Sugar”?  Onions, garlic, and foods seasoned with them should also be avoided, as they can lead to gastrointestinal issues. Bones, while a traditional treat for dogs, can splinter and cause choking or internal damage. Be aware that overly fatty foods such as turkey skin shouldn’t be fed to your pet because they can cause pancreatitis and other gastric upsets.  Ensure that all holiday meals are pet-friendly and resist the urge to share your plate directly with your pets. If you have guests, make sure they are aware of these guidelines as well.

A Silent Night: Minimizing Stress and Anxiety

The holiday season can bring about changes in routine, additional guests, and noisy celebrations, which may contribute to stress and anxiety for our pets. Create a quiet and safe space where they can retreat if the festivities become overwhelming. Consider using calming products, such as pheromone diffusers, calming collars or calming supplements to help ease their anxiety.

If you’re hosting gatherings, inform guests about your pets and their boundaries. Some pets may be uncomfortable around strangers or children, so it’s essential to establish guidelines to support a stress-free environment for everyone.

Warmth and Comfort in Chilly Weather

As the temperatures drop, it’s crucial to keep your pets warm and comfortable. While it’s tempting to dress them up in adorable holiday-themed outfits, be mindful of their comfort and mobility. If your pet enjoys wearing clothes, opt for snug, well-fitting garments that don’t restrict movement or cover their eyes, nose, or mouth.

Provide cozy and warm bedding for your pets, especially if they spend time outdoors. Be sure they have access to fresh water that won’t freeze and monitor their time outside during colder weather to prevent issues like frostbite.

Gifting Thoughtfully for Pets

Including your pets in the gift-giving festivities can be a delightful experience. However, choose gifts with their safety and preferences in mind. Avoid toys with small parts that can be chewed off and swallowed and opt for items that are appropriate for your pet’s size and breed.

Consider interactive toys that stimulate their minds and provide both mental and physical exercise. Treats and chews can also be excellent gifts. Please be sure they are suitable for your pet’s dietary needs and restrictions.
